more knowledge is presented to us by entertaining and exciting methods. Modern children have been brought up in a world where television is often one of their main sources of information. With many channels to choose from, video’s, DVD’s and game consoles all competing for attention it is not so surprising that they are less likely to sit down and search for information from a book than the children of twenty years ago. Living history interpretation is an ideal way to engage the
interest of such busy enquiring minds. By presenting them with not just an image of a historical figure but a real person that will talk and interact with them you can break down barriers to learning and present knowledge in a format that is truly memorable. Living history presents opportunities to discover not just what things look like but how they work and feel. Why do I need a professional service?
Re-enactment has in recent years become a growth hobby, it is now possible for someone to join a re-enactment group, be supplied with some equipment, a little bit of knowledge and be unleashed upon an unsuspecting public in a few short hours. Unfortunately this does not instantly transform them into an expert in their subject nor does it mean that they have the skills needed to teach. Lore and Saga has been trading full time for six years but I had been involved in living history
for over ten years before that with other professional organisations such as Danelaw Viking Village. That experience has enabled me to design my in school presentations to fit the requirements of the National Curriculum and hone them carefully to produce the maximum educational result for the children. What does an in school presentation involve? A normal in school presentation lasts two hours spread over a
morning or afternoon. I will arrive at the school about 45 minutes before the start and will need parking for a van and access to a space to set up, this could be a school hall or a clear space in a classroom big enough for the children, me and a lot of equipment. I shall make my presentation in fully accurate costume for the session you have booked, this will have been researched right down to the materials and construction methods. The equipment I will bring to support the
session will all be faithful reproductions of original archaeological finds and the best up to date information. The presentation itself varies according to the session booked but some similarities exist. Once introductions and ground rules have been established, we will place our subject into a time frame and then discuss the evidence we have for our information. The main body of the talk is designed to involve the children in exploring the core issues of the subject at hand.
Do I need to make any special preparations for your visit? The in school presentations are designed to be fitted into the topic at any point so you can either use it to reinforce your own lessons or use it as a primer to build upon. I will require a space to work in, with the children sat around me. The ideal situation is a school hall but a large classroom with a cleared area works just as well. If an activity day is
being booked then tables and chairs will also be needed. How much will it cost us? A normal in school talk is charged at £90.00 for a morning or afternoon session. Activity days are charged at £5.50 per child with a minimum charge of £250.00 In addition I charge travelling expenses of 30p per mile both ways From Oldham. What areas do you cover?
I am based in Oldham, Lancashire. Depending on the size of the booking or project I can travel anywhere within the UK. but for some bookings the travelling expenses may become a deciding factor. How do I book a presentation? If you have a particular date in mind is is wise to book early, there are still some spaces for this year but my diary is already open for next.
