School visits and living history presentations are now one of the most important parts of my work. Children respond wonderfully to a Viking or a Roman soldier in their own school and the opportunity for teaching history in a new way surely cannot be beaten. The key elements for Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum encourage teachers to find new and interesting opportunities to help children explore historical subjects. Books, Videos and the Internet may help to give an idea of life in the past, but what was it really like to live in Britain over a thousand years ago ? It is my aim to put flesh on the dry bones of history with lively and interesting presentations for schools in full and accurate costume. My presentations are supported by a large selection of carefully recreated artefacts from the periods giving the
children a chance to handle objects and form their own impressions. In School services currently include Viking talks, Viking activity days, Roman talks and Roman activity days. An activity day consists of a talk in the morning followed by an afternoon with four craft sessions based upon the topic of the day usually ending with a saga or story. Based in the Greater Manchester area I am conveniently
placed for much of Northern England but greater distances can be accommodated in special circumstances. I have also been franchised to work as local agent in the North West for “Danelaw” the highly successful living history education organisation working from Murton Park near York.
